Nourishing Your Body, Renewing Your Life
Welcome to Your Renewable Life
There has been a lot of talk about the potential health dangers of 5G. And there have been even more that debunk that and call it a conspiracy theory. In this post, I dig into the science and what I learned in my nutritional therapy training about this topic.
Ancient cultures held what we know as electromagnetic frequencies in high esteem as an important part of their spirituality and connectedness to self, others, and the universe. Since EMFs were spiritually based as coming from a higher power there was also a fear and obedience to this energy. These ancient civilizations intuitively prayed or spoke in OMS or mantras in attempts to work with this native electromagnetic energy. *Cited from Nutritional Therapy Association (2019). Environmental Factors Student Guide.
This traditional wisdom respected the earth’s natural energy while attempting to understand and work with it. Since then, we’ve learned a lot more about EMFs for progress but also to our detriment as I will describe further.
Like we tend to do in our modern culture, when we learn about something beneficial to our natural surroundings, we go about improving or mass-producing it. This is the exciting, inventive spirit of human nature and we have all seen great benefits and conveniences, but there is almost always another side to the coin that has negative consequences to the prosperity brought on by such inventions and discoveries. The subject of EMFs is no different. As we have made technological advances to make our busy daily lives “easier” we have also uncovered and made ourselves susceptible to health dangers. Such risks may include several types of cancer, damage to our DNA and cell structure, brain health including learning and spatial memory performance, and much more.
Functional medicine doctors have noted patients with sensitivity to EMF exposure so often that it has a diagnosis: electromagnetic hypersensitivity. Some of the symptoms associated with this EMF sensitivity include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, nausea, dizziness, heart palpitations, digestive issues, red burning skin, insomnia, muscle aches and pains, and depression.
However, there are many other factors and conditions that can cause these symptoms as well. In fact, the World Health Organization reported that there is no conclusive evidence that EMF or RF exposure causes adverse health effects. Electromagnetic fields and public health. (2016, August 4). There is clearly more research to be done on humans regarding this subject as we become more and more reliant on “smart” devices and wireless products for our collective efficiency.
In my opinion, there are enough anecdotal potential dangers and warnings to cause me to take action in reducing EMF exposure to my loved ones, my clients, and myself.
There is plenty of scientific-based research we can look at to study the dangers of EMF exposure. The one I would like to look at here is referenced in the NTA Student Guide for Environmental Factors (2019). The National Toxicology Program Study of Cell Phone Radio Frequency Radiation (https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/go/cellphone) was a 10-year study completed in 2018.
The study was created to research the effects of cell phones on cancer and tumor growth as named. The study uncovered significant tumor growth in the heart, brain, and adrenal glands of rats. These observations prompted some scientists to push for a reclassification of cell phone usage to be Carcinogenic to humans. Though there are many suspicions of the dangers of EMFs to us humans, this study doesn’t drive the evidence home as a confirmed case that cell phones are carcinogenic to humans. I.e cancer-causing. There are several reasons for this.
1. The study was performed on rats and mice, not humans. We can’t know that the observations made on animals such as rats predict facts for humans. It does, however, warrant further study and human trial
2. The dosage of radiation was up to 4x higher than the maximum radiation exposure and for intensely longer durations than humans would be exposed.
3. And finally, the male rats exposed to the cellphone radiation lived longer than the rats who were not exposed to the radiation. This may be because the male rats exposed to radiation were less likely to develop chronic kidney problems, which are a common cause of death among older rats, the researchers said.
The U.S. FDA contracted NTP to perform this study and presented a statement regarding the findings.
“Our colleagues at NTP echoed this point in a statement earlier this year about their draft final report, including the important note that “these findings should not be directly extrapolated to human cell phone usage.
We agree that these findings should not be applied to human cell phone usage.” said Jeffrey Shuren, M.D., J.D., Director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health

In closing, the dangers of EMFs are definitely a concern, especially as technology advances and humans are more and more intertwined with these devices. The fact that so much evidence is inconclusive should not stop us from continuing research on these possible (probable) ill effects on our health. While we wait for conclusive evidence we should still take care to minimize our exposure as well as heeding advice to minimize our exposure to other environmental toxins like chemicals, pollutants, plastics, medications, and other stressors that are hard on the human body. Minimizing negative exposures and focusing on the foundations will help the body more effectively fight stressors such as EMFs as it was made to do
